How important it is to use proper literature in numismatics, was already explained several times. In order to help our GIG members, we maintain a large numismatic library close to Frankfurt.
The face of a library is its librarian
The GIG library holds approximately 4.000 titles. Among them are many reference works, auction catalogues, magazines of numismatic societies and essays by several numismatists. To build up a library was a matter of great concern to the GIG, since a library is of fundamental use to the GIG members.
Herber Goebel was the first librarian of the GIG. In 1968 he maintained the first library at the attic of his house, starting with about 100 works. To provide GIG members with professional publications was the aim. In 1989 Herbert Goebel handed over the library with about 2.000 titles to Friedhelm Litzenberger. The GIG library was moved to the city library of Moerfelden with its own section and opening hours.

After 20 years in the office Friedhelm Litzenberger looks upon a great achievement. The GIG library holds now more than 4.000 titles and is being highly frequented. When talking to him, you will notice that books are his passion - right after coins. So don't be suprised that he answers every GIG member's request with great commitment and is pleased over each interest on literature of any coin collector novice.
In the future Friedhelm Litzenberger wants to make some improvements. He wants to register all books in a database and make them accessable to everyone on our website. This realy huge project will take some time and is a great challenge.
The expansion of our library is another wish of our librarian. Due to some of his own purchases and many generous book donations of GIG members and coinfriends, the GIG library became an important contact point. Friedhelm Litzenberg thanks you for your book donation in the past and is looking forward to many more in the future.
GIG members living in Germany are welcome to use the GIG library. If you want to find out, how this works and wether the literature you are looking for is in stock, please send your enquire to Friedhelm Litzenberger.
