In 1965 the Gesellschaft für Internationale Geldgeschichte (GIG) was founded at Schloß Burgpreppach by 19 members. It was originally known by the name of Museum für internationale Geldgeschichte gemeinnützige Forschungsgesellschaft e.V.


which could be of use for collectors are presented. Another column informs you about exhibitions, swap meets for coins and lectures. All articles are well illustrated and give you the opportunity to get a more profound knowledge about your collecting field.

 

Today the GIG counts more than 1200 members from more than 30 countries on all 5 continents. The association promotes scientific research on all fields of coins, money and medals including their history. 

 

Members who have rendered outstanding services to the GIG are rewarded with the golden honour needle which was donated in 1970 and has been awarded thirty times. Since 1974 the GIG prize which is endowed with 500 € (formely 1000 DM) is awarded every year. The first awardee in 1974 was Prof. Dr. Peter Berghaus. The GIG prize goes to outstanding personalities from Germany and abroad who are not neccessarily experts in the numismatic field, but are friendly to the interest of coin collectors. 

 

GIG study tours are taking place every year. The first tour in 1977 led us to Leningrad (today known as St. Petersburg) and Moscow. Other tours led us to numismatic destinations in Germany (Berlin and Dresden) and many other countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

 

Since April, 4th 1992 president Christian Stoess represents the association with care and attention. Since April, 10th 2010 Georg Sänger functions as vice president, Monika Kotzek manages the office.
